Test Instruments must be Science

STORY

Test Instruments must be Science

In the 1950s, I realized that it is necessary to get started learning about academic research in order to beat foreign firms in the field of test instruments.
This made me think many times.

Learning from World, Dealing with World

The 32,000 pieces of metallic materials are exposed outdoors across the U.S.A. every year. (omission) Unlike the principle of "Replacing a new one when it is broken", the essence of science that tries to prolong product’s life as much as possible is clearly expressed. If the spirit of "taking care of a thing" is thought to be the material civilization, the work in NBS is to support the civilization. The U.S.A. is not a country of the amount of materials but taking care of them.

ISO/TC61(Plastics)meeting (1969)

The International meeting such as ISO (International Organization for Standardization), which experts from various countries participate in, were the best place to learn the latest weathering technology. The Suga brothers realized this earlier and participated in ISO/TC38 (Textiles) meeting in 1958. We participate in international meetings in various fields every year since then. Continuous participation in international meetings is still an important duty for us to become a world-class test instruments manufacturer.

Wishing for Developing Weathering Technologies in Japan

The 1st Suga Weathering Technology Foundation Award Ceremony (1982)

"Rusting", "Fading", and "Deteriorating" are fatal natural phenomenon for civilization. (omission) Recently, there have been remarkable advance because of the development and research of test instruments, and the basic test and research of deterioration has become an outstanding level compared to other countries. The foundation was established to subsidize and further expand this field.

The Establishment of Suga Weathering Technology Foundation
Regarding“Weathering technology” against various resistances of products made of metal, paint, plastic and so on, we promote the development of technology through fostering of research personnel, commendation of distinguished researchers, research promotion and test research by our research committees, and in 1981 Suga Weathering Technology Foundation was established for the purpose of contributing to the development of industry and national welfare in Japan.

Award Plaques, the Symbol Presented to Excellent Researchers in the Field of Weathering

In the Greek mythology, there is a legend that science is in common with cows, and it is written that Titan as the representative of human must lift science up high and have enough ability.

It is a pity that Japan is called an Imitation Country Internationally
(Cited from Nagaichi Suga, “Mumyo Jitomyo No.Nine”)

The Suga brothers explained the importance of making original products, because Japan is called an imitation country for a long while in the 1950s.

Creating Natural Snow

As we celebrated our 60th anniversary, we resolved to create an entirely original technology in the world to pass something down the generations. (omission) I chose new technology from the natural phenomena related to my business and made a decision to let natural snow fall artificially.

“Create GENUINE snow that is the same as natural one”, “Think by ourselves and create an original SUGA product rather than an imitation”.
We succeeded in the development of the world’s first instrument that let natural snow fall in 1985.

Create the Instrument from Materials

In the 1980s, the self-manufacture of xenon arc lamps as the light resource for weather meter had been a dream of us for many years. Then, in 1989, the laboratory was built produce the lamps in Hidaka Laboratory.

Calibration on Behalf of the State Institution
(Spectral Irradiance, Temperature, and Pressure)

I have been followed up on my life progress through the study of Optics for a long time. The certificate has a grave responsibility for a state institution. (omission) This is the job that carries out the calibration of light on behalf of the state institution; thus it is fundamentally different from an ordinary job.

Establish a Calibration based on International Standard

Starting with the calibration of spectral irradiance conform to JCSS in 2000, our calibration department issue calibration certificate conform to ISO/IEC 17025; water cooled 7.5kW xenon lamps from 2007, and spectral irradiance, resistance thermometry and pressure gauge from 2018.

Aim for “Only SUGA”

Based on patents that are the proof of "Only SUGA" technology, we have received numerous honorable awards, including Orders of Culture (2 people) and Medals of Honors (8 people); In addition, the Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun (The Daily Industrial News) Top 10 New Products Awards 4 times, the Commendation by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, the Commendation by the Director-General of Science and Technology Agency, the commendation by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, the Commendation by the Director-General of National Land Agency, and the Commendation by the Director-General of Small and Medium Enterprise Agency.

Protection of our intellectual property rights

Nagaichi Suga said “The patent is the greatest legacy” and explained the importance of the patent for aiming “Only SUGA”.
SUGA has applied for more than 1,000 patents, unity models, designs, and trademarks.

History of Only SUGA products

SUGA has produced a variety of test instruments to meet customers’ needs which change with the times. We will constantly strive to produce test instruments that accurately capture the needs of the times.

The civilization of the country is proportional to the precision of test instruments made in the country.

It was grateful to receive an order from the United Nations. When we delivered our test instrument to GHQ in 1954, our business expanded, and performance of our products were improved. (omission) Weather meter is one of the most difficult of all test instruments. We have to know the latest technology which makes a rapid advance.
